I felt really self conscious in this outfit today. First, the skirt, although it passes the fingertip rule, is a little too short for my liking. It looks fine here, but it totally rides up really high when I sit down and when I'm walking around it just feels really short. I must be getting old. Second, the sweater (which I got a SUPER good deal on, thanks to working at The Limited... 7 years ago) is a little too tight for my taste these days. And since I can't wear my flat black boots in the rain, I had to wear heeled boots today, which made me feel kind of hookerish (you know, tight shirt + heeled boots + short skirt). Okay, this outfit is probably FAR from hookerish (have you seen what those girls are wearing these days?!) but it just made me feel really self-conscious all day long.
So, I was on facebook today, and I'm looking to print a coupon for Old Navy (I don't pay full price for low quality items... and supposedly the additional 50% off clearance sale is starting tomorrow) and glanced down and saw that one of the commenters' profile picture is a from-the-side shot of her pregnant belly, showing skin and all. Look, I know I've been pregnant before, so nothing against pregnant ladies, but seriously, nothing grosses me out more than seeing all that skin stretched out across a big belly.
I don't mind fully-clothed profile belly shots, those are fine (and fun to see progress), it's just the ones where the lady lifts up her shirt or just wears a sports bra. GROSS. And half-naked maternity photos? I want to barf. (No offense if you've taken them, I just don't want to see them.) I don't understand how someone could post a bared belly picture for her facebook profile picture and pretty much force all her friends and random acquaintances to see the photo when it pops up unsuspectingly in their feeds. Am I just being weird?
Actually, now that I think about it, I think just seeing midriff skin just kind of freaks me out. I don't like seeing people's bikini or shirtless (for guys) pictures, it just makes me feel uncomfortable. Airbrushed photos of celebrities? Fine. But people that I know? Shudder. Yep, I'm getting old.

My least favorite photos to see on facebook though are when they put up pictures from the actual delivery of the baby. *shudder* There are private aspects of life that should be kept private.

I think this outfit is amazing, but I know what you mean. You definitely don't look hookerish... but I know what you are saying. My one pair of stilleo heeled black boots are something I shy away from wearing to work especially with skirts, becuase the combination just hits a wrong chord for me in the modesty department. And I'm sure it looks fine, (as it does on you!), but just something in my head says no.

Some chick I used to work with put pregnant pictures on Facebook of her with just underwear and her husbands hands to cover her breast. It was one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen.

ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of those pregnancy photos either, but I can understand why some of those women do it. I heard that pregnancy can be difficult all the changes a woman's body goes through so they don't feel sexy. Taking those photos kind of brings back that feeling and makes them feel like a woman and proud of the body they do have during pregnancy. Perhaps it should be kept more private, but I'm sure if they post it, they do want everyone to see it too. =P

i love your outfit! the skirt looks great, although i know what you mean about uncomfortably short skirts. i've had to deal with my fair share of short skirts/dresses and i can never really enjoy the outfit fully because i'm too busy thinking, "oh no are my undies visible?" haha

@Stylepint- yeah, I totally agree. Maybe that's why I don't like seeing bared belly pregnancy pictures? I hated my body during pregnancy.. maybe this irrational phobia stems from jealousy that I could never be like those women who loved their bodies during pregnancy.
@Justine- I totally thought of turning it into a cardigan! But this is my only 100% cashmere sweater, and I was a little freaked about messing up... that, and it's a boat neck, which would look kind of funny as a cardigan. Oh well.
