Ace of Lace

Lace top: Nordstrom Rack
Jeans: Paige Denim
Flats: Target

I felt a little like Morticia Addams when I was wearing this black lace top yesterday. I was self-conscious about the illusion of showing skin when I was at work, and left my jacket on for most of the day. Normally, I'd tuck the cami into my jeans, but it just looked weird tucked in, so I left it out... which also ended up looking weird.

The solid neckline of the shirt makes it difficult to layer because I can't wear normal tank tops underneath, so my choices are pretty limited. I did like how I paired the shirt with a blue t-shirt underneath on the last time I wore it, but in my desire to NOT wear the lace shirt in the exact same way twice, I made myself super uncomfortable. That's just stupid, and I learned my lesson. Next time: blue shirt.

In other news, I went to Nordstrom Rack over the weekend and blew my budget on these two items:

Frye Jane Boot

Elizabeth and James pleated shorts

I'm not trying to brag (or am I?), but I must have the best luck at Nordstrom Rack... probably because I go there at least once a week to scour the clearance racks. The Frye boots were only $80 because they were "worn and refinished" but there were no scuffs at all on the leather sole, and they looked completely new! The only thing I can find that's wrong with these is the stitching came out in a small section, but it's barely noticeable.

As for the shorts, I'm still debating whether I should keep them or not.. and right now it's gravitating towards not. Sad face. As much as I love them (they were on clearance for $56, which is a steal for Elizabeth and James), I have no idea where I'd wear them to. They're too short for work or church, and too trendy for running errands, and I don't do much outside of those activities. They're suuuuuuuper cute, but just not practical for my lifestyle. My budget is already super tight and I don't need them. Ugh. Can't decide.

PS. Yes, I have another post titled "Lace of Base" - I'm pretty creative.

  1. I LOVE that you wore the black lace with tan. You look amazing!

I would totally keep the black shorts. I think they're adorable and not at all too trendy for running errands. I wear dresses and skirts for that, so why not shorts? Plus, date nights? YES!

  2. I don't know why you felt self conscious you look fantastic! I actually wore a black lace top with a beige tank top the other day to work, and got a ton of compliments, and one person told me my shirt looked very ' Ann Taylor'. I didn't get it at first, but now seeing a similar look on you I definitely do. You look so chic! Also, those shoes were a fantastic choice with that shirt!

  3. UGHhhhh...the Janes are my DREAM Frye boot....but way out of my price range at FP. I've never seen Fryes at my Rack, but I'm also not in there very often - might need to change that! If you ever decide you're tired of the boots, let me know and I'll gladly take them off your hands :)

  4. I love your lace top, and your hair looks really pretty here! Also, I vote keep the shorts. I think they are perfect weekend shorts.

  5. The top does not look weird at all, actually it's really pretty. Love the shorts as well :)

  6. One of the Racks that I frequent (there's four that I visit regularly...) that's in the redneck section of town used to always have Frye boots, but they were all the weird colors (yellow, white) which were cute, but not $200-for-yellow-boots cute. This was the first time seeing regular-looking fryes for such a good price! I'll keep my eyes peeled for you. Size 7?

  7. I was just coming over from EBEW to post about how I love this look - how it looks carefree and easy, not all vavavoom even though it is black lace - and here you are talking about how you felt self conscious about it! No worries... you DO NOT look like any Addams Family characters! Paired with the jeans and tennies, it looks so casual. I love it!

  8. I am a huge proponent of "if it's not broke, why fix it?"

Those shorts are darling. You can't wear them casually with flat sandals?

  9. Ace of Base is now stuck in my head. Seriously, I need to hit up Nordstrom Rack with you because you find the best stuff!  $80 Frye boots? Unreal!

  10. The trick is going there A LOT! There's four Racks that I visit a lot (Downtown, Factoria, Southcenter, Supermall) so I'm pretty familiar with the merchandise. I usually just swing by the clearance racks, then the shoes. I keep finding the J brand lovestory jeans in NOT my sizes :(

  11. I probably could! but Seattle summers are pretty mild, so the opportunities to wear shorts are a lot fewer than if I were in Texas :(

  12. Lady. You look so pretty. I love the cami sticking out below. Plus, those jeans fit you like a dream - as in, I dream that my jeans fit that well.

  13. Okay, I think this is a great look.  I can see how that top would be challenging, but I do like it.

  14. I quite like the E+J paperbag shorts. Can we see a modeling pic so we can help you decide whether or not to keep? I think they can be dressed down like most other shorts, so it should be fine for running errands. But I'm also someone who wears whatever whenever, and don't really pay attention to what others are wearing, so I probably stick out like a sore thumb, haha.

PS - I'm planning on using "Lace as Base" for a future title post! Don't be mad when that goes up please :D

  16. I think your outfit is lovely - but I know what you mean about being self-conscious about revealing too much skin... I actually changed out of my lace shirt today because it was just too much skin with the shorts I wanted to wear. I couldn't handle it! So I'm missing EBEW today. Oh well. :(

Also? I forgot how much I love Nordstrom Rack... I especially love hunting for shoes there.

  17. I love how you used the camel-coloured cami but I completely understand how awkward lace can be at the office and I hate those days when you totally regret you wore what you wore - don't worry though, you looked great!

Also, I'm so sad to hear about the shorts!!! They're super cute and were definitely a steal but I know what you mean - you need an item to be versatile if it's going eat such a giant hole in your budget. One day, Kimmie, one day we will both own Elizabeth and James for keeps.

  18. that's a really pretty lace top ;)
and flares! i miss my flares. you look great!

  19. I do love that shirt, but I just find lace in general hard to style...which is why I'm really happy about today's EBEW. I can't wait to go shopping for more lace items now :)

  20. I think its not too trendy to run errands in....the shorts are adorable. I vote keep! And I can understand how you might feel a bit self-conscious with the top but you look great. I like the zipper detail in the back - a bit edgy to balance the feminine lace.

I don't know what you're talking about.  Your outfit is amazing.  That's all there is to it.  :)

  22. you have a great body and I dont think you should feel selfconscious wearing Lace or something sheer at work. I would try wearing it with a high waisted skirt and your cute flats!

  23. I really like that top! the sleeves are really cute :) and those shorts are really cute. I say keep them, and wear them with tights later on in the year to work or when running errands :)

  24. Two of my favorite things in that top, lace and ruched sleeves, swoon! Oh those shorts are pretty darn cute! Do you think you can wear them maybe during summer nights out and about? Or dress them down during the weekend?

  25. That lace top is just pretty!
I don't think it looks weird at all!

The shorts is definitely a keep!
I always run errand in shorts and flip flops!

  26. True! Maybe I'm still not in summer mode yet because it's still cold up in these parts and can't really picture myself wearing shorts just yet. I think I may end up keeping them :)

  27. Thanks for visiting, Danielle! I dressing down the lace by wearing faded jeans and flats.. trying to avoid the vavavoom look at work! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Haha! Thanks Linda. They are one of my favorite pairs but they're getting to be pretty faded and frayed at the bottom :( Makes me sad.

  29. Haha, feel free to steal my post titles! I'm sure it'll come up soon because you have your two lace dresses in your 30 :)

I think I'm going to end up keeping the shorts. I really like them, and I think I would cry if I was forced to return them. They're a size or two too big (that's what happens when you shop clearance!) so they sit lower on my hips than the model, and so they aren't *too* short. I'll just have to make them work with my wardrobe.

  30. I LOVE the Rack! I never find anything good like 90% of the times that I go, but the other 10%, I find gold. :)

And lace is tricky because i feel it's one of those "sexy" fabrics (along with shiny silk and leopard print) - but that's just my opinion.

  31. After thinking and thinking and thinking, I'm going to keep the shorts. I know I'd totally regret returning them if I did, so I might as well save myself the heartache and keep them :)

Plus, I don't own any black shorts, so they do fill a void in my closet! And $56 isn't bad. I was willing to spend that much on a pair from Express a few months ago, and I'm glad I didn't. These are so much more worth it :)

I hope you get you're able to find your very own E&J soon! :)

  32. Thanks Jarucha! All you guys convinced me I should keep them :)

And I love the zipper back! It's the main reason why I love this shirt so much!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Aw, thanks so much, Misty! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ooh! that's a good idea. I may try that next time! The problem is, there's the exposed zipper on the back and it makes tucking in the shirt kind of awkward (because the zipper won't lie flat against my back) but it might work :) Thanks for the suggestion!

  35. Thanks, Stevia! I think it's just hard to imagine wearing shorts right now when it's still so cold in Seattle. Maybe in month I'll be wearing these everywhere. I'm definitely keeping them after all you guys convinced me I should ;)

  36. Oh, I hope you do! And I hope it warms up so you can wear them and BLOG them

  39. Hi Kimmie, I'm quite a newbie to the blogging world but I've been following your blog for quite some time now. It feels so good to know that people on a budget can look stylish at the same time!  You look great in your outfit and thanks for the inspiration!

  40. I love those shorts!! $56 is a little steep for shorts, but like you said, it was a steal for  Elizabeth and James ones! Maybe you can pair them with leggings and a simple vneck and cardigan or something for errands?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Aw, thanks Marianne! :) Blogs are my favorite source of inspiration because they're all real people wearing affordable clothes as opposed to photoshopped magazine spreads featuring super expensive stuff. :)

  42. What a beautiful lace top. I always struggle with camis under see-through shirts. They look weird tucked in and untucked.

Those are amazing finds! The only reason you should keep those E & J shorts is if they fit you perfectly. Do they make you look amazing? Do you feel amazing in them? If so, definitely keep them. Even if you wear them once a year :) And you know where you can wear them? Out and about to take an outfit photo for your blog!!!
