First Clutch

Top: Nordstrom BP
Skirt: J.Crew
Shoes: Tribeca via Nordstrom
Clutch: c/o Handbag Heaven
Ring: InPink (from Adored Austin giveaway)

I mentioned before that I have a very, very lame handbag collection. I own one everyday purse that's falling apart, and a small black Coach purse that I got years ago and rarely use (is Coach even cool anymore?! I have no idea). I have a separate bag from Target that fits my laptop and I use that everyday for work, and a diaper bag that I use the rest of the time.

I've always liked the look of clutches, even though I've never owned one nor understood how you're supposed to function if one of your arms or hands has to keep holding it. Where do you put it when you eat at restaurants if you can't hang it on your chair? the table? your lap? What do you do with it when you need to use the restroom if you can't hang it from those handy little purse hooks on the back of the door? What do you do when you have to carry a ton of shopping bags? What do you do when you have a drink in your hand and the hors d'oeuvres tray comes around?!! So many questions.

When Handbag Heaven generously offered to send me a new handbag from their vast selection of affordable and chic bags, I had thought to get a new everyday bag to replace my old one, but decided last minute that I should just try out a clutch! I picked the Studio 54 Clutch which has a convenient chain inside for when I want to turn it into a shoulder bag (and use my hands). I love the colors and the piping, and it couldn't be more perfect for my very first clutch.

PS. I did end up getting a new everyday purse as an anniversary gift from my husband a few weeks later, so that void is filled, whew! I can finally retire my old purse.

  1. Ooh that's a great clutch, and even more versatile with the shoulder chain. Otherwise you'd have to stick the bag under your arm when the hors d'oeuvres came round. I'm a public transport girl so I used to carry my life around with me (which usually included a pair of flats if I was wearing heels, umbrella, planner, a book, a cardigan, iPod, etc) so I needed a huge bag wherever I went. Now my "life" is my baby so i carry him and his things around. I did buy myself a little Longchamp pouchette (a casual clutch) to put my new essentials (iPhone, wallet, lip balm) to throw in his diaper bag. I do have a collection of fancy occasion clutches that I never use. Maybe I should swap out the practical black nylon one for a flashy metallic one for kicks! After all I do think that shopping is only a waste of money if you don't use the purchases!

  2. I have that same clutch (from Francesca's) except the colors are slightly different. I need to break it out soon. It is a great little bag that goes with pretty much everything.

  3. That is such a pretty clutch! And yes I have the same dilemma as you with clutches, where to put them down?!?  I usually look for clutches that come with straps for that very reason! Or at least a wristlet strap!

  4. haha! I totally don't understand clutches either! I never know what to do with them...but your's is really cute and since it has a handy little chain tucked inside, that makes it all the more awesome. :) You look really cute!

  5. Kimmie, your style has really evolved in the short time that I've been reading your blog.  I love that you stick to your budget and find things that work for you AND your family.  That said, I own about 3 or 4 clutches that are primarily special occasion as I have the same problem, PLUS I want to carry all my things with me throughout the day. I love the clutch you chose and I can't wait to see your new everyday bag!

  6. VERY cute clutch, Kimmie!  Great choice.  I especially like it with the jade/turquoise accessories you've got on!

  7. You look like a seasoned veteran wielding that clutch. It's lovely! And I can't neglect mentioning that skirt -- I love the simple ruffle detailing at the waistband.

  8. That's so cool it comes with a shoulder strap. I like the look of clutches too but I don't seem to have very many opportunities to use one.

  9. That was one of my choices from handbag heaven too! But I ended up with a tote, which I also love.  I love this though!

  11. I've spent most of the summer carrying clutches...I love how they force me to edit the giant piles of crap I tend to carry around with me daily down to a few essentials. Yes, they can be a little cumbersome, but I have found that if I simply tuck it neatly under my arm, my hands are free for both handshakes and cocktails. In restaurants, I tuck it behind me in the chair...also, I make sure it has a little strap for bathroom times, because...ew.

  12. That's a cute clutch! And I really like that the colors are easy to match and work with! Also, that ring is a stunner!

  13. I had similar concerns about clutches, but now I know to look for one with a hideaway strap. :) Love the color of your ring and bracelet!

  14. Oooh, how fun! What colors are in yours?

  15. You can add a little wristlet strap out of ribbon onto the zipper, if it doesn't have a chain.  At least then you can dangle it from your wrist instead of holding it in your armpit which is usually what I do in a pinch!

  16. Yeah, I'm usually stuck with the diaper bag so I throw just throw everything in there. But a clutch is good for days that I don't have to tote a baby around! :) And such a good point- Shopping IS a waste of money if you don't use your purchases! :)

  17. Yeah! I love my wristlet because I can just hang it from my hand when Im doing other stuff. I love the hide-away straps, those are always fun! :)

  18. Thanks, Jodi! Another reason I don't understand clutches is that you can't fit very much in there! Just my wallet and cell phone alone fill this one up. Not very convenient for a pack-rat like me, but I they're good for going out or running simple errands :)

  19. Haha, I totally cringe at some of the outfits (and pictures) I posted not too long ago. I hope my style is evolving in a good way! :)

  20. Haha, thanks Kelsey! I love the waistband detailing as well. Though it makes it difficult if I don't want to tuck in my shirt :(

  21. Yeah, the shoulder strap was what won me over :)

  22. I saw your super cute denim tote! All their bags are really cute, but I didn't like that a lot of them were replications of designer bags. Wouldn't that have been funny if we both ended up with the same bag? :)

  23. Haha, maybe I'm just not good at the tucking-under-arm-and-using-hands thing. I end up looking like a T-rex. But yeah, they're good for forcing me to only carry essentials. I lug around way too much useless stuff!

  24. Kerry, you are GENIUS. This one has a shoulder chain inside so I think I'm good, but that's definitely a good solution for regular clutches! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah! or Kerry suggested to just add a wristlet strap with ribbon to the zipper. Problem solved! :)

  26. I like to stick my cluthces under my armpits, especially the oversized ones like yours. At restaurants I stick them behind me on my seat. When going to the bathroom, I'd give it to whoever I'm with to hold, or put it on top of a paper towel on the floor, hahaha.

Coming from a handbag lover, this may become a slippery slope, Kimmie :D
One bag is never enough and there are so many cute ones out there!

  27. Haha, thanks for the tips, Cee! I don't really see myself becoming too handbag-obsessed. Too expensive of a hobby to keep up (because all the ones that I really like are in the $1,500 range...). I'll just be happy with what I have for now! :)

  28. i love this clutch, and i love your ring! makes for a pretty hand altogether. I MISSED YOUR BLOG.

i have a coach clutch that i never use either, but because of it, every time Boyf sees any girl with a distinctive purse he says, "what kind is that, babe? coach clutch?"

  29. Really cute clutch - I think it totally suits you!

  30. The colors of mine are the same except the top color is more of a cream color than a mustard color. It is a great little clutch and the fact that it comes with a chain is such a bonus.

  31. I love your clutch! What a great choice and I love the mustard color.  I love a good clutch, especially for a special occasion or an evening out.  And I love Coach.  Definitely still cool, especially the vintage styles that have come back in a big way.
