Awhile ago it seemed that every single blogger I was following owned a black and white striped pencil skirt, and I was thoroughly convinced that it was a must-have item for my closet. I searched high and low for the perfect skirt (not too tight or short, reasonably priced, chunky stripes), and finally I found this lone skirt on the sale rack at The Limited in my size. I quickly snatched it up, but then it sat unworn in my closet because I had no idea what to pair with it (story of my life).
Okay, so a striped skirt really is not a closet staple for me, and I found out the hard way. Now I have to reevaluate the items on my "NEED TO BUY" list to see if I really need them, or if I want them just to have them. Right now my list includes a mustard yellow skirt, brown sandals, a white button-up, and a new grey t-shirt, because after looking at these pictures, the one above isn't too flattering.

I too have been on the hunt for the perfect stripe skirt. It seems like they are all too short and tight. ;) I'm not looking for a hoochie mama skirt! ;) This is one is perfect and looks amazing on you. ;) You did a great job of styling it. Just think of it as a neutral. It will go with any solid color top you own. Easy. ;)
ReplyDeleteI have one that I used to wear like CRAZY and now I have no idea what I used to pair it with. I'm kind of at a loss. No clue what happened there.
ReplyDeleteI love it with the gray and that cool belt though!
I've been looking for a nice striped pencil skirt for a long time, but none of them are flattering on me at all. I've basically given up. I like this outfit on you.
ReplyDeleteI have that skirt and have the same styling problem. My favorite right now is to wear it with a black and while polka dot tank, but I have also worn it with plain black, red, and teal.
ReplyDeleteIt's so wonderful to find things on sale! The skirt is great!

I love this skirt, Kimmie! I think it's hard to go wrong with brown sandals, a white button-up and a grey t-shirt, and I love my yellow skirt. But I've found that for me it's more about the cut of the pieces that make me wear or not wear them, kinda like what it seems like you're experiencing with your grey tshirt (which I think looks fine!) Anyway, if you don't want that striped skirt I'll take it!
ReplyDeleteThe belt has cool detail. I think the skirt is a bit boxy and maybe the Limited isn't the most petite friendly brand. Good luck with your wishlist! I also am very influenced by bloggers. I bought a checkered button up (forget the name now) b/c everyone had one. I've only worn it once! Maybe I'll wear it more when the weather cools down.
ReplyDeleteI think you look adorable! I love that skirt and I think the gray tee works with it, but I know how you feel when something just doesn't quite fit and flatter the way you'd like.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I totally agree! All the striped skirts from forever 21 are meant to be bodycon skirts which is NOT what I want! :)
ReplyDeleteYou wore yours in a few blog posts, right? I swear, reading blogs is not beneficial to my wallet. When I found this skirt I was with my sister who doesn't read blogs and she was like, "really? A striped skirt? Okkkkkkay..." and I just wanted to tell her that all the cool bloggers had one but I realized how stupid that sounded.
ReplyDeleteA b/w polka dot tank and striped skirt combo sounds super cute!
ReplyDeleteYes, it is! And my sister had a $10 off coupon that she let me use, so even better! :)
ReplyDeleteOh definitely the cut of the pieces makes a huge difference! I've found that while I do like pencil skirts, wearing them makes me feel too "business-y" and overdressed at work or church, so I need to stick with more casual clothes. Those get worn the most!
ReplyDeleteYou want the skirt? I'm going to hold on for it for month or two and see if I can find more ways to wear it, but if I decide to get rid of it, I'll definitely let you know! :)
Yeah, some of The Limited's pants have the option of regular, tall or short inseams, but overall they don't really cater towards petites. I don't mind though because their regular length stuff fits me just fine without alterations.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're talking about a gingham shirt, right? I'm sure you'll have lots of opportunities to wear that in the fall!
Thanks, Melissa! :)
ReplyDeleteDon't give up!
ReplyDeleteBut if you do, it's really no big deal. I think a striped top is way more versatile than a striped skirt :)
And I have more than my fair share of striped tops, so I think I'm good. :)
ReplyDeleteJust read your "about me" page and I think that Blue Lanterns is a great name for the blog & so meaningful! And now I know why your site is so beautiful -- because you design web pages, right? And I can't read your post on self-portraits :(. The link says only invited people can read.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I was reading the "about" page because I wanted to see if you classified yourself as a "petite" blogger. Sorry I assumed you were a petite blogger just 'cause you're Asian. Great you can wear "regular" length pants!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I didn't know what Monkeyface closed down her blog :( I'll delete the link, thanks for letting me know!
ReplyDeleteLOL, it's okay. I think people just assume that I'm another petite blogger since the majority of Asian bloggers are! I'm 5'4.5" so on the tall side of petite, and on the short side of regular, but petite stuff is always too short in the arms and legs for me, so I just stick with regular length and then alter them if they're too long!
ReplyDeleteLove it, can't wait to see what you do

I really love this skirt! Especially the perfect length of it :)

I just tried on a similar skirt at The Limited except that it was navy with pink stripes. It fit well, but I could not think of how it would work with my existing wardrobe. Your black / white one is much more versatile! How about pairing with a colored blouse / chambray shirt / neon or bright colored anything / floral / dots / gingham? I think your combo above looks great - very casual chic!
