T-shirts

Top/belt/shoes/necklace: Target
Jeans: Gap

I've been looking for a basic grey tee, and finally found one that's almost perfect. It's soft, v-neck, and cheap (I bought it when it was on sale for $5, and had a $2 off any Mossimo clothing item coupon, so a total of $3) but it has this stupid little chest pocket. Little as in, literally, it's tiny. It's conveniently covered by my hair in the pics, but it's a pointless pocket and I really want to remove it, I just don't want to damage my $3 tee in the process and have to buy a new one.

Now that I have a grey one, I realize I want a white t-shirt too. Not sure if I want another Target one because of the mini-pocket (nothing against pockets, I'd rather have a regular-sized pocket), but not sure what I want. Should I splurge and get a high quality tee (had my eyes on an T by Alexander Wang one...) or be cheap because no one should be spending $80 on a plain white t-shirt? Knowing me, I'll get holes and stains in it pretty quickly.

Where are your favorite basic t-shirts from? I'm thinking I want something v-neck, but not too low, and not too thin as to need a cami underneath. Any suggestions?

  2. Those jeans make your legs look miles long. :)
I am still looking for the perfect, affordable tee as well ... I hope you share what you find!

  3. The tiny pocket IS annoying.  But there is too much else to love about these shirts!  I have so many and do every thing in them.  Sleep, work out, wear under cardigans, with jeans and a scarf for a basic outfit.  And you cannot beat the price.  I literally have 3 white ones just so I know I could wear one every day (and sometimes I do).  They rock.

  4. My v-necks are from Target, but I'm finding they're a little too long for me.  Both H&M and Cotton On have basic tees right now that I like, around $10.  Ooh, and I just saw that Elaine said Shade Clothing--I'd agree with that too.

  5. American Eagle and Urban Outfitters have decent ones, but I'm a big fan of Target's! I don't mind the little pockets that much.

  6. Those jeans make your legs look amazing.

I have several basic tshirts from many different places. The gap ones are always super great the first couple wears, but then they get lumpy and deformed and just don't look good anymore. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or what. I have a shirt from target that isn't v neck and doesn't have a pocket that I really like, and has kept it's shape quite well. I also have a shirt from Hanes that is a men's shirt from the underware section and it is the softest thing ever. The worst part of that one is that it is the tiniest bit too big for me, but I've thought of getting a boys large instead of a mens small/xsmall and trying that out. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect tee too!

  7. 1. I love those pants. They make your legs look so long and they have the perfect amount of flare. Seriously, I want them.
    2. I spent a good 30 seconds looking at your boobs looking for the tiny pocket.
    3. I've been looking for the perfect t-shirt too. I feel many tshirt materials make me look even lumpier (than I already do) so I kind of avoid them. I've been tempted to try the everlane shirts, which say they have the luxury feel without the price. They go for like $15 and have free returns so I may bite the bullet some day soon....

  8. I think you look great in this shirt. If you think about it, you'd have to buy 15 of these Target ones to get one of the Alexander Wang one... So you can spill stuff however much you want.

You look great with the jeans by the way! Legs look like the go on forever!

  9. Go to Marshall's or TJ Maxx.  I found my perfect grey v-neck tee (with no pocket!) from MICHAEL Michael Kors for $7 at Marshall's.  On the same trip, my sister found a great navy blue v-neck from Cynthia Rowley for $19.99 that was marked down to $6.  Check the clearance racks, they always have different brands and the pricing is great.  I know I sound like a walking discount store commercial, but I love buying nicer quality, name-brands for a good price!

  10.  Oh yes! I did a little browsing earlier and I liked what I saw. Thanks for the rec!

  11. Haha, I'm not THAT cheap. $17 is a fair price! I'll have to check VS out. Thanks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  12.  Thanks, Carrie! I've gotten a few suggestions and I'll be checking a few out! :)

  13. Haha, they ARE awesome, and you really can't beat the price. They have some crew-neck versions too, right? So funny that you have three of the white ones. I'll take that as a testimony that they're great :)

  14. I do tend to like my shirts longer.. the other day I wore a shirt that I had from 10 years ago and I couldn't believe how short it was! Longer shirts definitely help with hiding muffin tops :)

I wish we had a Cotton On around here, but I'll check out H&M next time. They have a great basics section that I had forgotten about!

  15. I like AE, but it seems like ALL of their stuff has the little bird logo on it. I'll check them out though, along with UO. The Target pockets aren't that bad, but I find them disproportionate to the shirt. I guess it's not that big of a deal though!

  16. I used to have a ton of the Gap perfect Tees back when I worked there (a decade ago) - I don't remember mine getting lumpy, but I do remember them being really short and tight because they were more of a fitted style... something I don't want to be wearing right now. I know they have more styles now so I'll have to check them out. I've tried men's undershirts (shh, don't tell my husband I tried his on) but they just looked too much like undershirts to me. Maybe I need a different brand/style!

  17. Hahha, oops. I probably should not talk about boob pockets when they've covered by my hair. Lesson learned.

Everlane shirts? I've never heard of them! I just checked them out, and they look awesome. I'm very, very tempted...

Oh, and the jeans. Sydney/Daybook had them first, and I fell in love with them on her. Last summer I found them on the clearance rack for like $10 so obviously they came home with me. I felt like a copy-cat (like, ahem, a certain petite blogger...) but I really can't pass up $10 jeans from Gap. They're SUUUPER flared from the side though, almost too much (http://www.bluepaperlanterns.com/2011/08/olive-and-pink.html) but if Sydney can rock them, that means they're cool, right?

    ReplyDelete
  18. That's true! But I'll always wonder what a $80 t-shirt feels like, and if it's REALLY that much better than an $8 one.

  19. Off the top of my head, I have tees from H&M (thin but surprisingly has held up decently over time, and I wash my clothes often. They should offer thicker ones too, I would think), AE (bird logo is near the hem, so not bothersome to me; held up well over time too), Express (the version I own has a little too much stretch, but they offer unique colors), and ON (from many years ago when their quality was better).

  20. You look amazing in these jeans... your legs look super long! For tees, I usually pick up inexpensive ones from Old Navy, Kohls, or places like Marshall's.

  21. OMG! I'm obsessed with the Target Tee's from this summer. I bought the grey one too and then went back and got every other color in my size. Literally.

But I can't agree with you on the chest pocket. I love it. It's adorable!

Have you seen Everlane? https://www.everlane.com/ They have designer t-shirts for $15. Something about cutting out the middle man blah blah blah.

    ReplyDelete
  22.  Thanks, Cee! I'll check out H&M, AE and Express next time I'm at the mall. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks, Yi-Chia! Oooh Marshall's, hadn't thought of that. Last time I went there, I found all sorts of super cute things. DANGER!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hahah, okay. the pocket is not THAT bad. and I guess it's somewhat adorable..? I do like how soft it is and how well it's washed (so far). Solid colored t-shirts used to be my everyday uniform a few years ago but I've slowly moved away from them. Now all I want is plain t-shirts. :)

AND YES. I checked out Everlane last night, and was *THISCLOSE* to placing an order, since you get free shipping in the 24 hours after you sign up. I think I may go that route for now, because $15 is a pretty good deal if they are similar to the "designer" tees. I'm laughing at the "designer tees" - such an oxymoron.

  25. I have a zillion of those Target t-shirts and looove them. But I just bought a v-neck t-shirt from Old Navy a few weeks ago and was actually surprised that I liked it just as much as my target ones. They are pretty much identical, although maybe the ON one has slightly longer sleeves, and no pocket. Good luck :)

p.s. I'm dying over those jeans...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Can I say you look phenom in those jeans? Do you know what kind of cut they are?

    ReplyDelete
  27. They were a trouser flare jean from last summer, they're cute from the front but the legs are SUPER flared (see a side view here: http://www.bluepaperlanterns.com/2011/08/olive-and-pink.html ) They probably won't have the exact pair in stores anymore, but maybe there's something similar?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I will have to check out the Old Navy ones! I've been wary of their quality recently, but I think they still have good basics, and of course, you get what your pay for :) Longer sleeves are a plus!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I picked up some plain v-neck t's at target, Mossimo brand, but without the pocket. I did buy one with the pocket, but the material is thin, and the pocket bugs. The other Mossimo ones they have without the pocket are a slightly thicker material and I really like the feel of them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I could see why they could be a little too flared but I love them. Don't feel like a copy cat (I promise I won't create a website depicting all of your copies...all of 1). I wish I could have most of Sydney's closet - she's so cute. Her baby just slays me.

  31. Love this look on you, Kimmie! You look so tall and lean and elegant! ;) I usually get me tees from cheap places like forever21, rue21, charlotte russe etc. ;) I have gotten the basic men's v-neck tees (like Hanes) and really like them. The sleeves are a little longer and the v isn't quite as deep which I like. And they are pretty cheap!

  32. my five year old daughter, marrin, is looking over my shoulder as i'm browsing..just found your blog this very instant..she says, "wow, she is beautiful!" i agree : )

  33. Those jeans are bangin' on you! I used to get all my tees from F21, but now that I'm an adult (ha!) I decided to invest in some crew neck from J. Crew while they were on sale ($25 each I think?) and I LOVE them. Super comfy, great colors, and the fit is perfect (not too long, not too tight).

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, Target t-shirts. I have the exact same one, along with like 5 other colors. They are super comfy and cheap, but I agree....so hate the useless and annoying pocket. I have a plain white tee from American Apparel and really like it. V-neck, not too low and no stupid pocket....I suggest checking their selection out :)

  35. I just bought a gray one from JC Penney for $9...a.n.a. brand...they also had them in white.  Very soft and the kind of cut that could be dressed up or down.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I actually buy the men's hanes v-neck shirts in a small...its pretty close to a girly tshirt

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am not a fan of the mini pockets on the Target shirts either!!

I usually get my vnecks from Forever 21. I've had the same one for almost 5 years and it was only $4.80 or something ridiculously cheap like that. The only downside is that the seams get twisted after a few washes, but you can't really tell when you're wearing them (only super noticeable when folding laundry).

    ReplyDelete
  38. That must be one tiny pocket, sheesh! Great outfit, you look so long and lean! I bought a white H&M tee from their basic collection for $10 that doesn't need a cami underneath as long as you wear a nude bra. Also, is the pocket like glued on? A seam ripper won't do?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm so glad you posted this because I've been on a tee shirt quest myself! I've been tempted to try the StyleMint shirts but don't want to shell out tons on a tee that might not work for me. I'm totally going to try this Target shirt, pocket and all. You've also inspired me to dig out my wide leg jeans because this is a fantastic look!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Just found your blog via Creative Index - so glad I did! I think I have this t-shirt - and that darn pocket annoys me too! But it is nice & soft :) And I just had a baby in May too!

  41. Simple and elegant... You can buy some from basics from american eagle or vero moda ... http://www.katagogi.com/Rania

  44.  Awesome! Thanks so much for following up and letting me know!

    ReplyDelete
  45. You look great!  Can't tell you just had a baby!

    ReplyDelete
  46. WHAT? $7? You are seriously so good at finding great deals, Ana!

I will have to go check out TJ Maxx now!

    ReplyDelete
  47. No pocket? thicker material? I WANT! where do you find them? Are they folded on the tables or are they hung up?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I tired some of my husband's v-neck undershirts (shh don't tell him, they were his brand new ones, not sweat stained old ones) but it just looked like I was wearing an undershirt. :( And my forever 21 one shrank in the wash a long time ago so I've been wary of buying from them, even if it only is like $5!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Aww your daughter sounds like such a sweetheart :) Tell her "thanks" from me!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love J.Crew tees but I hate waiting for sales, because I'm never sure if my size will still be in stock when they're marked all the way down (and I hate buying stuff and having it marked down even more. I want the lowest price possible, please) but I agree, they're perfect, just not the price :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Haha! I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the pocket. I mean, it's fine I guess, but I would like them WAY better sans pocket. I had totally forgotten about American Apparel, I'll have to check them out!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Nice! I'll have to check out JCPenney next time. I love when you can dress up or down certain items of clothing, and a plain tee can be so versatile!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I tried the hanes wife beater tank tops in a size small once, and they were so tight! Are there really men that skinny? Ive been afraid to try their size small undershirts, especially since they're all neatly packaged up and I can't try them on first :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. What? You are lucky. I bought a vneck from Forever 21 last year or the year before and it totally shrank and got twisted in the wash. It's like a baby doll tee now, haha!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I could probably use a seam ripper, but because the knit jersey material is more prone to holes, I'm afraid that if I removed the pocket it would leave holes in the shirt :(

    ReplyDelete
  56.  I've heard great things about the stylemint shirts, but yeah, I'm always afraid with those subscription things that I'll forget to cancel for a month and be stuck with something I don't really like. Plus, $30 is still kind of steep for t-shirts!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Congrats on your May baby!! I love how soft the shirt is, but yeah, it could do without the pocket :) Thanks for visiting!

    ReplyDelete
  58.  I've never heard of vero moda! They look like they have some great pieces. Thanks for the suggestions!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I feel like the quality of F21 clothes are very hit or miss. Sorry to hear about your v-neck experience... :(

    ReplyDelete
  60. I usually buy mine at Old Navy! I love your look, that's something I'd wear all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  61. yeah you can find randomly nice designer goods for sure at tjmaxx/marshalls.  it's worth a look to browse the racks there. i just have to be extra picky there!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Those jeans look fantastic on you!  Makes you look so long and leggy.  But maybe you are because you're taller anyway? :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. they were folded on the tables.
