Matching the Needle

Jeans: J. Brand

Yep, I'm still wearing maternity clothes. BUT!!! These Old Navy shirts are probably the worst designed maternity shirts ever. The front of the shirt has a rounded hem to account for a larger belly, but that's it. No side ruching, no extra length, no super baggy fit typical of maternity clothes. I bought it pretty early on in my pregnancy* last winter and only wore it a handful of times before I outgrew it. It was just too tight and short, even after sizing up.

Now, I hate that I had to spend money on maternity clothes that I only wore like 5 times, so when I was putting all that stuff away a few months ago, I realized that I could continue to wear this shirt, only with the front half-tucked to hide the curved hem. Even now, it's still kind of tight. Oh well. I just wanted to show off my boots. I love them.

*I feel like I bring up my previous pregnancy and budget in every other post... SORRY.

  1. You'd never be able to tell that was a maternity shirt. I'm starting to think it's a conspiracy by maternity clothing manufacturers to make you rebuy stuff throughout pregnancy!

And those are very cute boots. :)

  2. I never would have guessed that's a maternity shirt, it's really cute!  And the boots are definitely amazing, love the neutral vibe of this whole outfit.

  3. Love that top and the boots are awesome! :)
I think I only bought three actual maternity items when I was pregnant. I lived in leggings, tunics and knit dresses. :) Maternity clothes were just too expensive and five years ago not very cute.
And hon, it's your Blog talk about your pregnancy and budget all you want. :)

  4. i couldn't even tell this was a maternity shirt until you pointed it out! you've been doing such an awesome job stretching your budget this yet... makes me want to try something similar for myself in 2013. so inspiring!

also, i love the touch of orange in the necklace. I've always wondered how people decide on what to decorate the top of the Space Needle with.

  5. Couldn't tell that was maternity at all. Why would you want to wear horizontal stripes while with big belly anyways ;). Cute boots! And cute necklace. Where from? Love your 2nd shot! Very artistic. Don't apologize for talking about your pregnancy or budget -- it's you, we love it.

  6. I couldn't tell that it's a maternity shirt! I just thought you had a flat stomach. =)

  7. I agree with all the other cmoments: can't tell it's a maternity shirt. Also can't tell that you had a baby!

  9. I was going to say you look amazing! It doesn't look like a maternity shirt at all - you look super cute!

  10. I know, right? Well, most of Old Navy maternity stuff was ENORMOUS, so it just surprised me that these tops would be so fitted. At least they transition well to post-partum! :)

  11. Even now, I've been seeing some of Target's maternity line and I go, "why didn't they have THAT when I was pregnant?!" and yes, I remember when I was pregnant 4 years ago, the options were even less appealing. :) I think I lived in leggings and dresses as well!

  12. Having a budget sometimes sucks, but at other times, I've found that it really helps me be really deliberate with my purchases. Good luck if you end up doing something for 2013!

And I have no idea why the top of the Space Needle is orange, because it's pretty recent.. I think for the 50 year anniversary or something. But they'll be painting it soon with the green trees that won some online vote, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that will look, especially from far away!

  13. Oh.. I wore striped shirts throughout my pregnancy! I mean, striped shirts other than this one :) I think it's fine with a big belly!

The necklace is from Forever 21, I think I got it a year or two ago? it's old.

  14. LOL, I guess I'm just good at disguising it? ;)

  15. Well it HAS been like almost 6 months, so I can't use the "just had a baby" excuse for too much longer. :)

  16. I've always wanted to go to Seattle. I feel I would love it a lot.

Speaking of loving a lot...those boots. GIMME. Ok, at least let me borrow?

  17. I'm sure you looked great in stripes! I was talking mostly about me :). And cool F21 find!

  19. Love how you're matching the needle! ;)

I can't believe that's a maternity top until you wrote about the design! That's amazing because I seriously couldn't tell that was maternity. I would hate to spend money on something I would only wear a handful of times too! Good thing you're wearing it post-pregnancy.

I love hearing about your budget! It helps me think about mine... lol

  20. Those boots are gorgeous, Kimmie! I bought my first pair of Frye boots last year and absolutely love them. They are so well made and classic... definitely worth the investment. Love the striped shirt... I would have never guessed that it's maternity! I have bad memories of trying to dress myself when I was pregnant with twins. I was HUGE in the mid-section and ended up having to wear tent-like tops to stay covered. :P

  23. You look great! I NEVER would have guessed that top is technically maternity! Way to get more use out of rarely worn clothes!

  24. I love this outfit! Those boots are adorable! And I totally agree, I never would have guessed that shirt was maternity.

  25. I would never guess that that shirt was from a maternity line, or that you were pregnant a year ago - you teeny little thing! Those boots are adorable and the Space Needle in the background makes me so wistful for the PNW - I  finished high school and went to college in Oregon, and am constantly harassing my SO (who went to college and lived in Seattle for a while) to move back. :) Hope you have a great weekend!

  26. OMG I can't imagine what it would be like to have twins. How many lbs were they at birth? Do you even remember the first year? :) One baby is already exhausting enough, I can't even begin to think of how hard it would be to have two of them, both needing your attention at the same time!

I would have probably given up trying to dress nice if I was pregnant with twins :)

  30. What a great, classic outfit! Ain't no shame in maternity wear. I've frequently eyed the maternity dresses at Target...(What??? They're usually cuter!)

  31. I've encountered a fair number of maternity shirts that fit awkwardly on me and I can't imagine how they'd fit a pregnant body. Thank you for making me sure I'm not crazy. ANYway, I love this outfit--boots, necklace, stripes, perfect!

  32. Cool photos! And I think I have those same jeans!

  33. Great outfit. Love the Carson boots - I have a pair in black. Just wondering if you thought they looked a lot like the Melissa Buttons. I am in the same boat where I am wanting the Melissa Buttons but worried they are much like the Carsons but different leather and taller. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  34. If I had to pick one pair out of the two, I'd probably stick with the Carsons. I like the softer leather and the shorter shaft which is more flattering (the Melissa's shaft is almost a bit too tall for me and I'm 5'5" - though they look awesome on taller gals). Aside from the stiffer leather, I wish the Melissa had a bit of heel instead of being so flat. :) But I still love both pairs. If you still want the Melissas, you should get a different color (mine are cognac and I love them) other than black so they aren't too similar that way :)

  35. What color are your carson boots?  I love them!

    ReplyDelete
  36. They're the "smoke" color. Hope that helps! :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes it does!  I've decided to invest in a pair of Frys and I can't decide between the Jane or the Carson. I found your blog while googling for photos of people wearing them. Both styles look so cute on you!

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's a tough choice! I love both styles equally :) If it helps at all, the Carson has softer leather, so they end up being more slouchy and rugged, whereas the Jane is a stiffer leather so they stand up straight and have a more polished look. Good luck!
