Old things

Dress: Forgot
Cardigan: Banana Republic
Boots: Steve Madden
Scarf: Burberry
Thanks to everyone who left me nice "get well soon" comments on my last post! Thank goodness it was truly a 24 hour bug, and I was feeling completely better the next day, but man, those 24 hours were BAD.

I wore this outfit a week or two ago when I was feeling a little bit "blah" and the last thing I wanted to reach for was constricting jeans or anything with a belt. I also was in no mood for colors, so black, brown, and taupe it was.

Funny thing is, everything in this outfit was bought in 2008 or 2009. The cardigan may be the newest item with a November 2009 purchase date (I looked up the order confirmation email), but the dress was bought as a maternity dress when I was pregnant with P (he turns four this year). So yep, I wear a lot of old stuff around here.

I think I'm going to try to dig out the OLDEST wearable item in my closet and see how I style it now. Wearable item because I'm not talking about those holey t-shirts that I've saved since 1990 or my prom dress hanging in the back of my closet. The oldest thing I can think of off the top of my head dates back to around 2005, but I'm SURE I can find stuff from college or earlier if I dig hard enough. Anyone else want to do this with me? If enough of you show interest, I could set up a linky party and we can all go around to each others' blogs and laugh at how old our clothes is. :)

  1. Oh! I've cleaned my closet about 1 month ago... Of course I have old stuff but not that old :( Till last month I still had some jeans with 15 years! Yes, 15!

  2. I would love to see a link up with everyone's oldest clothing!

  3. This is a wonderful neutral outfit.  I love the black and browns paired together.  I really think it's cool that you can remember the timeframe of your pieces and when you purchased them. It just goes to show that classic pieces never go out of style!  Heather

What a fun idea!  I don't really have much in a way of old clothes between moving & having a kid - I got rid of basically my before preggo wardrobe since i could not get the weight off.  So most of what I have now are about 2 years old.

  5. I wore a purse yesterday that my mom bought me in high school. So pre- *coughcough1996cough*. I'm trying to figure out what my oldest piece of clothing is - I'm afraid it'd probably be something lame, like my university sweatshirt. But I think you're on to something with the link up!

  6. Haha! I would love to do this! I know I have something still from freshman year of high school (probably should just get rid of it) but love the idea, I would totally link up!

Love the neutrals in this outfit and the scarf :)

  7. Love the scarf, sometimes we accumulate so much in our closets without realizing how many of those things we could style again. I'm sure that if I try looking deep inside my closet for things I got back in the 2009 I'll be amazed too :)

  8. I would love to do that! I mean - not dig out the old prom dresses - but it's always a challenge to try and "make new" some of your oldest pieces. Sounds like fun!

  9. This outfit is cute! I love black and brown together.

  10. I was doing some of that this morning! I pulled out a dress from 2009 that I purchased and literally only ever wear with a black blazer, and was trying to find ways to restyle it. I miserably failed, but I'll be trying again soon!

  11. ok, now i'm curious what the oldest thing in my closet it. I know I have jeans from 2006.. but I am sure there are other things that are older.

  12. I love that idea! Count me in. I can already think of a sweatshirt I have from my junior year of high school. Oh, and I got that 24 hour bug yesterday. Brutal.

  13. Girl, first off I love your neutral outfit! :) And I still have shoes from the nineties and plenty of clothes (that I wear regularly) from the early 2000s. :)

  14. Oh my goodness!  That sounds like a lot of fun. xD  I'm sure I have stuff from middle school somewhere...

  15. I noticed you and I both purchased teal jeans from Target this month! You will be great inspiration as these pants make me a little nervous (in a good way)!

  16. I love the simplicity of this outfit!

  17. Glad you're feeling better, and I'm game for the challenge...I cringe at what I'll end up having to style. :)

  18. 15 year old jeans? Dang! I think I've cleaned out all of my SUPER old things so everything is in the 2008-2010 range, but nothing close to like, 15 years. :)

  19. I've never hosted a link up, so I have to go figure out the logistics, but it'll be fun!

  20. I only remember when I bought the cardigan because I remember having a $10 off birthday code (with no minimum $ amount) and I spent FOREVER picking out something to buy before finally settling on the cardigan. Every year since then, I've waited for my $10 off birthday code, but now they only send a code for like, $10 off a $50 purchase, to which I say NO THANKS.

  21. I would totally go looking in my closet, although, I probably don't fit into my oldest clothes! So embarrassing! :D

  22. You couldn't get the weight off? You are a tiny little thing right now, is it even possible to be even tinier? :) But yeah, the majority of my wardrobe is 2009 and later. I recently cleaned out my closet and had a bunch of things from around 2004-2006 that just weren't my style anymore or were really baggy and fit very poorly. Not that I've lost weight or anything, I guess I just wore really ill-fitting clothes before!

  23. Haha! I have so many high school/university sweatshirts still. Thank goodness I don't have any of the purses I used in high school, because those were all SUPER tacky with the giant logos everywhere. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yay! Haha, I dont think I have anything from high school anymore, other than sweatshirts/t-shirts that I wear to sleep, though I wouldn't mind getting my hands on the Gap denim jacket that I used to have but donated too soon.

I'll try to figure out the logistics for the link up and let everyone know! :) Hope you can join!

  25. How exciting! I just wore mine yesterday for the first time :) Will have the post up sometime next week I hope, though in the photographs they look more like a bright blue instead of teal :(

  26. Middle school?!! Oh boy, I don't think I can even go that far back :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oooo I don't even know what's the oldest thing in my closet... I'm curious. haha.. besides my prom dress or my high school graduation gown. Hmm... a link up would be fun! Just need to find what's that item first. lol

  28. Exactly! Though I did recently get rid of a lot of old things because of the poor fit. I'm pretty sure I still have a thing or two though! :)

  29. Woo hoo! I'm excited to see what you come up with! I'll post some more details for the link up later. :)

  30. haha! yes, this dress has weird sleeves and a weird empire waist so I haven't worn it much, but I never tried to just wear a buttoned up cardigan over it to hide all that :) It's always fun finding new ways to wear old stuff.

  31. Jeans from 2006? In 2006, I was wearing super low rise bootleg jeans (I had a favorite pair from Fossil, I had it in like 3 different washes). Maybe I could still pull them off if I still had them today, but ugh, the super low rise? no thanks.

  32. Oh man! I hope you're feeling better today! Did K get it too? I saw that both of you guys were sick! :(

haha, I still have all my high school t-shirts and sweatshirts, but there's no way I'm ever going to wear those on my blog. I think I may have to pick something from post-college :)

  33. What? from the nineties and early 2000s? YOU WIN, CC. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. haha, it'll be fun! though I will probably pick something "safe" haha. There's a reason I don't wear any of the SUPER old stuff!

  35. I love the black and brown together - so chic!

  36. Haha, it's fine! Everyone's bodies change over the years. The only reason I can still fit into stuff from a long time ago is because I used to wear really loose-fitting stuff that never fit right. :)

  37. haha, yes! I need to do some closet organizing this weekend and figure out what MY oldest item is :) Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Kimmie - sorry for the confusion but it took me 2+ years to get back to my pre-preggo size.  I am back to where I used to be.  I was hopping to lose the baby weight in 6 months and when that didn't happen - I thought I was staying that size FOREVER and got rid of my clothes.

Little did I know, all it took was some self control in my eating habits.  I am still trying to lose about 10 pounds which I honestly think will take FOREVER :)

  39. um hi, where was this burberry scarf hiding? seriously. it's super cute and looks great on you. i mean, if you hate it so much you never wear it you know my scarf rack always has room for more ;)

your hair looks very pretty here.

and i still haven't found anything older than my 2003 belt. but i will still participate even though I'm boring.

  42. I would totally link up for this!  I try to clean out my closet seasonally, but I definitely keep a few older things - I can already think of at least one thing I've had since freshman year of college (which would be... 2001... omg, so old!).  I love keeping around old things and still wearing them - you'd never know the pieces in your outfit weren't new, they're still so cute together!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Classic pieces, that's what I call them ;). Can't wait to see what other bloggers dig up! I wonder what the oldest item in my closet is...

    ReplyDelete
  44. I've had the scarf forever! It was a gift from my aunt ages ago, but I've rarely worn it because it's pretty short and doesn't wrap right. ACTUALLY, YOU SHOULD KNOW, I DID WEAR IT ONCE ON MY BLOG: http://www.bluepaperlanterns.com/2010/12/oh-na-na-whats-my-name.html

  45. Hey I was a freshman in college in 2001 too! But I don't think I have anything from my wardrobe back then anymore :( Can't wait to see what you come up with for the link-up!

  46. I'm ready to join in! Old closet finds are the best!

  47. Glad you feel better!  Choosing the oldest item seems tempting, but quite a few of my pieces are dang old.  Like 2004 or 2005 old, like yours.  I bought my denim jacket in college, which would make it at least as old as 2004.  (And who says Forever 21 items won't last?)  Maybe I'll dig and see if I can find anything older.

I do have a white fleece from GAP that I wear to every single retreat I have to go on, and I got it when I was 15 years old!  WTH MAN hahahaha.  It's still doing alright!  I wouldn't try to style that on a daily basis, but yeah.  I wear that.
