Taupe

Top: Ann Taylor Outlet
Skirt: Banana Outlet
Necklace: Forever 21

To be honest, I didn't like this outfit at all. I planned to wear this shirt again for the Take One Pass it On challenge, but I felt it needed a little more color, yet all the colored skirts and pants I tried on just didn't look right. After settling on a black skirt, I tried adding a colorful belt, but none of them looked right either.

Also, I'd think that bare legs and taupe pumps probably would have looked nicer, but seeing that it's freezing cold and I don't own taupe pumps (or really any pumps other than a nude pair that are pretty uncomfortable and reserved for special occasions only), I went with fleece lined tights and boots, even though I know the cowboy-ish boots look too clunky and rugged for the outfit. Maybe I should have gone with sleeker black boots? Too late now though.

If I wasn't doing the TOPIO challenge, I probably would have just skipped outfit pictures, but since I don't really know how to wear my aqua sweater again so soon without looking like I didn't do laundry, and I'm definitely not wearing those boots again, I'm just posting these and letting you know that it's okay if you think this outfit sucks. How would I change it for next time? Probably bare legs and black flats, because I'm still unsure what colors would go well with the top. What do you think? I would think a neutral color like taupe would be easy to pair with other stuff BUT IT'S NOT.

  1. Love the shirt! love, love, love. I think pink, navy, and khaki would look great with that top.

  2. The positive is that the necklace goes really well with the top! I don't mind the darker bottom half! It's funny how neutrals really aren't neutral at all because of the cut/style/feel of it. Don't be so hard on yourself!

  3. Honestly, I love it! I think the taupe is unexpected with the black but I love it! I think the brown-ish boots bring it all together!

  4. This outfit is cute! It's the best kind of simple: fitted, classic, and with a touch of jewelry around the neck. It may not be loud or whatever, but it looks good to me!

  5. I actually really love this, Kimmie! The boots echo the color of the top perfectly and the muted gold of the necklace is great. It looks like a well thought out sophisticated neutral outfit. :)
Taupe is indeed hard to pair. It usually looks good with reds/pinks (especially hot pink) or other neutrals like olive or black.

  6. Thanks, Jill! I did try pink but I think the pink that I had was too bright and I need a more muted pink or something darker like burgundy? I will try navy next though! :)

  7. Yeah I guess it's just a normal outfit (though next time I'd wear different shoes) but not really a "hey I have a style blog come look at my outfit!" kind of outfit, you know? :)

PS. Super excited to read your "Behind the Blog" on Fran's blog next week!!

  8. Oooh, yes, red or a muted pink would look nice. and olive too! I'll have to try out those combinations next time! Thanks for the suggestions, CC! :)

  9. I think the outfit looks great just the way it is! I think I probably would have added a leopard belt for a little fun.

  10. Ahhh now you're totally making me regret not buying that pair of leopard pumps at Target when they were on clearance! I think leopard print would have totally gone well with this outfit, as a belt or shoe, but too bad I don't own a single leopard print item. I didn't really care much for it for the longest time, but I've been starting to warm up to the print and now wish I had some!

  11. I like this color combination! While I agree that a pop of color might have added punch, not EVERY outfit needs punch, ya know? This is such a classic look and that necklace is so awesome. I agree with Happinessatmidlife that leopard would kick this up a notch, so maybe you can transition this look from winter to summer later in the year?

  12. I think you look great! Seriously. I love taupe...uh, tops. Hehe. BUT, when I see it on myself I have mixed feelings and I'm usually kind of disappointed. I don't think it does what I hope it will do given the undertones of my skin and my black hair.

  13. Keepin' it real! yeah that shade is hard to pair with things. I would say a jean skirt would look good with it. And eggplant looks nice with that color too.

  14. Yeah I normally pair this top with jeans or black bottoms, but eggplant or another muted darker color sounds like it would be pretty. I'll have to try that out next time. Thanks Jenni! :)

  15. Haha, yes, taupe is *probably* not a great color for my skin tone as well but I was blinded by a good deal and bought it, so I might as well wear it, right? It's actually a good reminder that I need to hold off on my "closet hole" items and not settle for something that's close but not quite what I want, because I bought this top when I was searching for that elusive white poly button-up, and found this one, and thought, hey, it's the shape and material and price that I want, and it's a neutral color, so it should work, BUT IT DOES NOT WORK! Oh well.

  16. Ugh, yes. leopard. I'm normally anti-animal print (reminds me of cougars and their skin tight mini dresses, or certain bloggers and their valentine's day leopard print dresses with pink belts... hmmm?) but I think in this case a leopard print belt or shoes would have looked really cute!

  17. For what it's worth, I think you look great (umm you always do). I really like the style and color of that shirt, although it is kind of an awkward shade to work with. Hmmm. It might work really well with jewel tones? I don't know...something to think about though :)
