Windy

Tee: J.Crew
Cardigan: Banana Factory Store
Skirt: Forever 21 (via Goodwill)
Boots: Frye Melissa Button (in Cognac)

Back in the day, I used to love spending my lunch breaks scouting out new photo locations at the parks near my office. It was fun at first to find a new place to take pictures and do mini-photoshoots with my tripod and camera (granted no passersby saw me), but before long it started to become a chore and my outfit posts started becoming fewer and farther in between. It took up so much time and most days I just didn't want to bother with it.

Fast forward a year and a half (wow, has it really been that long?) and now I'm making more of an effort to just show my outfit and not bother with the "photoshoots" because I really only need one or two photos to properly show an outfit. While I still want nice and varied backgrounds for my pictures, going out of my way to take one picture is kind of a waste of time, so I've been using a lot of side streets or places that I already know of that are in close proximity and known to be fairly secluded.

That didn't stop me from deciding to be adventurous one day just for old times sake during lunch and walking down to a nearby park by the water. It was a beautiful day but OMG SO COLD AND WINDY. Days like this mean that there aren't that many people milling about, but it also means terrible pictures because my cardigan kept getting blown open, my eyes were shut for half the photos, and I'm all tensed up because of how freezing the wind was. These were the the best of the dismal bunch, but I wasn't going to go all that way (it was pretty far!!) just to end up not using the pictures. I'm only showing the outfit, after all. :)

BTW, my son (who is now 3 and a half, where did time go?) went in my closet the other day and asked me, "mommy, can I see your zebra shirt?" I was so confused for a second before I realized that apparently striped shirt = zebra shirt.

  1. The zebra shirt comment is too cute. :) My little guy has a surprising interest in my wardrobe and frequently gives me his opinion on my purchases while we are shopping. :) My furry pieces are his favorites right now because he likes to pet them. :)

  2. I love the winter for location scouting. So many great places are vacated in the winter that I wouldn't be able to get close to in the spring and summer. I've been using my back deck for so far, since having changed cities all of my go to spots are now 2 hours away and I have to come up with some new go to places here.

I love varying my background just to give make things more interesting, but now that I don't work from home with a ridiculously flexible schedule I'm having a hard time making time to scout out places to take photos. All of that to say... I feel ya! =)

  3. Good for you braving the cold and wind!!! Cute outfit, as always. And what did he want with your zebra shirt? How cute!

  4. Love this outfit! I tried doing outfit pics last week during a windy day and the results were not pretty. Lesson learned!

I always envy bloggers that have such cool sceneries.  I try to remember to focus on the outfit & not the background & hence all my photos are taken from my back yard.  Plus I like to take pics early in the day before the wrinkles sets in.

  6. I agree, i used to go all out on my style posts, but now I've decided I don't have the time or energy.  So the backyard shot it is!

  7. Haha, there is no shame in having simple, get-the-job-done outfit photos! I just wanna see your clothes. I don't need to see them dancing in front of an eye-catching mural on a building wall in a downtown area. I mean, it's nice if that can happen. But sometimes it's like no degrees outside and you just wanna take photos in your apartment's stairwell all winter, and I think that's fine.

    But maybe that's just me..?

Anyway. Your cardigan is gorgeous. That color is unreal, and so stunning. <3

  8. Your son sounds adorable!  I will now call all striped shirts zebra shirts in his honor, lol.

That's mainly why I take my outfit photos indoors-- it's so cold and wet and snowy most of the year here that I'd rather be comfortable and just do some photoshopping to cut backgrounds out. xD

  9. OMG I hated wind when I took my pictures outside.  SO ANNOYING.  Anyway, I commend you.  Obviously I am so low key about pictures that I don't even bother going outside anymore haha.

  10. Haha! that's too cute. My guy occasionally shows interest in my clothes but his dinosaurs and animals and angry birds are far more interesting. I totally chucked at the mental image of your kiddo "petting" your furry pieces!

  11. Yes! Since I work right next to a major tourist area (Seattle Center with the Space Needle and all) it gets SO packed in the summer months (as well as around Thanksgiving and Christmas) so it's really nice in the wintertime to be able to take pictures without a single person walking by. The only issue I have is that IT IS COLD.

And back deck photos are totally fine! I still throw in a few deck photos every once in awhile, but try to get out to more varied locations if I am able to. I used to love all your interesting locations that you found, but at the end of the day, people come to our blogs to look at our outfits and not the scenery, so I think it's more of a personal hang-up, haha!

  12. Haha, he just wanted to see it, I have no idea why! Kids are funny :)

  13. Oh I know! If it's cold, pictures can still turn out fine, but windy? Forget about it. Even worse when I have my hair down because I just have mouthfuls of hair in every picture :)

  14. Yes! The focus is totally on the outfit and NOT the scenery, so don't feel bad. I wish I could take pictures before work (no wrinkles, good makeup & hair, look more awake, etc.) but I'm always in such a hurry to get out the door with the kids and running behind that it's not possible. And you have a super pretty backyard (the wall! the paving stones!) so I'm having some major backyard envy right now.

  15. My kid says the FUNNIEST things. And it's even funnier when he comments on my outfits because he has no idea what he's talking about, but it's totally cute.

  16. Yeah, it's totally not worth it to go out of the way just to take outfit pictures. These days mine are all in pretty convenient locations. Ain't nothing wrong with backyard shots! :)

  17. Haha! As long as we can see your outfit, I don't really care where the pictures were taken. And your apartment's stairwell has surprisingly good lighting, so why not? :)

  18. Haha, oh I'm so glad we don't get much snow here. If we did, I'd have to resort to indoor pictures as well, though I don't have any blank walls in our house to stand against :(

  19. I don't really have any places inside our house that has good lighting and a blank backdrop, plus all our shoes are kept in the garage (NO SHOES IN THE HOUSE, LOL) so it would just be a big pain to go get my shoes, then come in and take a picture, then take them back outside. Haha!

  20. Ugh, these pictures make me want to move to Seattle (which my husband would 100% in a heartbeat if I didn't have such stubborn and deep Minnesota roots).  GORGEOUS.

Also, your skirt is adorable.  I love it!!  Why are you always so cute?!

  21. haha aww your son is too cute! Zebra shirt. :)

I know what you mean.. the wind has been crazy lately and my photos .. I had to take a bunch in order to get a few that were 'decent' enough. We just can't win here! Either rain.. or wind. I would like one day without either of them please. :P

  22. HERE IS YOUR COMMENT, PREPARE YOURSELF.

    although you already ruined it

because I was going to tell you that you should tape down your clothes! I've been told by reputable fashion experts that it's the perfect way to make sure your clothes always look crisp when windy. Also, you should have worn a grey shirt to create a body suit of grey. what kind of fashun blogger are you anyway.

also I take pictures in the same location every day soooooo...

  23. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE EXCITED ABOUT A COMMENT.

Ok, how should I deploy my grey shirt? Do i need to tape it down? I'm so perplexed by this fashion thing! How do i wear a scarf? Where do I smuggle my squirrels? How do I groove my body? So many questions!
